1.) What is e-visa?

E-visa is short for electronic visas. It is simply a visa that anyone can apply for on their own just by sitting at home and filling out an application form available on the country's visa website eVisa Mart. It can be applied as early as 120 days in advance but must be made at least four calendar days before the date of arrival.

2.) Who can apply for an e-visa?

Any citizen out of 150+ allowed countries wanting to travel to India can apply for a visa online and should have a valid passport and required documents. Since it is an online process so one person can apply for the others as well but in form of different applications each.

3.) Can minors travel on a guardian's or parent's visa?

The answer is a big NO. Nobody is exempted from the essential requirement of carrying a visa and the same goes for minors (including newborns) as well.

4.) For what purposes can visas be granted electronically?

E-visa can be granted for the following purposes: -

  • Recreation, sightseeing, casual visit family, friends, and relatives.

  • Attending a short term yoga program.

  • Short term informal courses on local languages, music, dance, arts & crafts, cooking, medicine, etc. not exceeding 6 months duration and not issued with a qualifying certificate/ diploma, etc.

  • Voluntary work of short duration for a maximum period of one month, which does not involve any monetary payment or consideration of any kind in return.

  • Medical treatment including treatment under Indian systems of medicine or as an attendant to e-Medical visa holder.

  • The business purpose for trade or meetings or business-related work.

  • Attending a conference/ seminar/ workshop organized by a Ministry or Department of the Government of India, State Governments or UT Administrations, etc. or by their related organizations.

5.) Who cannot avail of the facility for e-visa?
  • Not available to a traveler of Pakistani origin.

  • Not available to Diplomatic Passport Holders.

  • E-Visa is not allowed for employment, NGO activities and journalism purpose.

  • Not available to individuals endorsed on Parent's or Spouse's Passport. Every individual should have a separate passport.

  • Not available to International Travel Document Holders other than a valid Passport.

6.) What are the basic requirements while applying for a visa online??
  • A working E-mail address to send the notifications to.

  • A credit/debit card for making payments.

  • A machine-readable passport valid for 6 months minimum after the end of the trip with at least 2 blank pages.

  • A confirmed return ticket or onward journey ticket.

7.) What is the procedure and documents required for filling out the application form online?

It is a three-step procedure: -

  1. Fill out the online application form,?

  2. Pay the visa processing fees, and?

  3. Download and print the Indian e-visa.?

Basic documents-

  • A digital colored passport size photo of the applicant clearly showing the face on a white background must be uploaded?

  • A scanned copy of the personal detail page containing the photo and essential information of the applicant?s current passport.

  • The business card or Guarantee letter of the employer in English. Official invitation of an organization registered on the territory of India while applying for business visa

  • A Copy of a Letter from the hospital concerned in India on its letterhead which includes the tentative date of admission/treatment in the hospital mentioning the name, nationality, and passport number of the patient while applying for a medical visa. Only two e-Medical Attendant visas shall be granted against one e-Medical Visa.

8.) What are the important points to keep in mind while filling the application form?
  • The applicant must fill all the compulsory details such as full name, date, and place of birth, address and contact info, nationality, etc carefully identical to that on the passport and the personal details should match the ones on the passport.?

  • Additional details such as profession or occupation, details of stay: places to be visited while in India, expected port of entry, etc also needs to be filled.

  • The applicant shall immediately receive a confirmation mail on the submission of the application on the email id provided.

  • A reference number will be generated to check the status of the application.

9.) What are the authorized entry ports???

The applicant may arrive at-

  • 28 designated Airports: - Ahmadabad, Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, Chennai, Chandigarh, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Gaya, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Port Blair, Pune, Tiruchirapalli, Trivandrum, Varanasi & Visakhapatnam; or

  • 5 designated seaports: - Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Chennai, and Mumbai.

And may depart from any of the Indian Immigration Check Posts (ICPs)

10.) How will the applicant receive an e-visa on approval??

The applicant shall receive it directly to the email address provided while filling the application form once the visa is granted. It is always advisable to provide a working e-mail ID.

11.) What is the validity of e-visa?
  • A 1-year tourist visa is valid for 365 days; a 5-year visa is valid for 05 years from the date of grant of ETA with multiple entries and continuous stay during each visit shall not exceed 90 days

  • The validity is 30 days from the date of the first arrival for 30 days tourist visa with double entries.

  • A business visa is valid for 365 days with multiple entries and a maximum of 180 days of continuous stay during each visit.

  • The validity of a medical visa is 60 days from the date of the first arrival in India and triple entry will be allowed within the validity period.

12.) Some essential points to keep in mind while applying for e-visa.
  • Carry a printout of the approves e-visa along with the original passport and all the other essential documents.

  • The E-visa processing fee once submitted is non-refundable and is not dependent on either Grant or Rejection of visa.

  • The validity of the visa starts from the date of issue and not from the date of travel.

  • The e-visa is non-convertible and non-extendible.

  • E-visa is not valid for visiting protected, restricted, or cantonment areas.

  • Indian e-visa can be applied for a maximum of two times in one year.
